Ferrets may not be a common animal choice for pets, but these critters have been domesticated by humans since way back in 4 BC. Many people find ferrets nice to have and as easy to keep, if not easier, as other typical pets like dogs and cats. Here are some basic tips about caring for ferrets.
Making a Home for the Ferret
Ferrets prefer living in spaces that resemble dens in the wild. A wired cage that is about 30 inches wide, 18 inches deep, and 18 inches long may suffice. Many ferrets like living in cages that have things to climb such as ramps and stairs. The cage should allow good ventilation, thus it is not wise to use aquariums. The floor may be covered by linoleum tiles and carpets or other soft washable materials to make the flooring more comfortable for ferrets to walk on than wire floors. The cage should be kept within 55 to 70 degrees. It should also be cleaned regularly with hot soapy water.
Feeding Ferrets
Ferrets are carnivores that require at least 22% fat and 34% protein from animal sources. It isn’t recommended to feed them dog or cat food. Chicken and turkey are ideal. Ferrets should never be fed vegetables because they are difficult to digest. Fruits are also not an option because sugars may increase tendencies for insulinoma. Egg whites should also be avoided because they can cause hemolytic anemia.
Potty Training
A small 3 to 5 inches-high cardboard box may be used as a litter box for ferrets. Litter pans should be secured to a side of the cage, far from the ferret’s eating and sleeping areas. Litter products made of plant or paper fibers are recommended to prevent clumping of fecal matter.
Keeping Ferrets Clean
Ferrets tend to produce undesirable odors. To prevent them from smelling to strongly, they can be bathed using a special ferret shampoo, kitten shampoo, or diluted baby shampoo. It isn’t advisable to bathe ferrets daily, because it will dry their skin, causing overcompensation of oil secretion, making the ferret smell more. It is also important to check the ferret’s ears for mites regularly. Ears should be cleaned using cotton soaked in a special cleanser that can be bought from a pet store.
Keeping Ferrets Active
Ferrets are very energetic animals. It is recommended to keep them entertained with toys that aren’t easy to break to maintain the animal’s safety.
Ferrets can be nice pets when one knows the right ways of caring for them. Having them can be a fun and exciting experience.
How To Groom Your Cat”s Coat.
Using the right grooming tools, cats are very simple to groom, especially once they get used to being brushed and combed. This is true regardless of what type of cat you own: short haired cats, medium haired cats, and wire-haired cats. All you have to do is run the comb over their fur and follow through with a grooming glove or slicker brush to create a soft coat that is filled with luster and shine.
Grooming Short-haired Cats
One huge benefit of grooming a short-haired cat such as a Cornish Rex is that you can use a flea comb on their fur. Flea combs are brushes that have very narrowly placed teeth that scrape up those pesky little fleas while at the same time giving your cat”s fur a thorough brushing.
When using this type of brush, you must use the fine comb first and then flea comb starting from the skin out. Do this in small lengths at a time, never hard, and dip the fleas into a bowl of soapy water as you catch them. After you have finished, simply flush the fleas down the toilet to get rid of them.
Caution: It is important to realize that even though using a flea comb is a great way to remove fleas from your cat during grooming, this does not solve the issue of having parasites living on your cat”s skin. You must take further action to get rid of these pesky little creatures. Consult with your veterinarian for more information on flea and other parasite control.
Grooming Long-haired Cats
Long-haired cats, on the other hand, cannot easily be groomed and brushed with a flea comb. Brushing the fur of a Persian cat is more involved than brushing a Colorpoint Shorthair. Long-haired cats require different grooming tools and procedures to obtain maximum cleanliness and shine. Here are four very simple steps to follow:
1. First take a medium or course comb and split your cat”s coat into different sections. Be sure to work through the fur in a gentle and slow manner.
2. Next, do exactly as you did in step one but this time use a fine-toothed comb.
3. Follow through now with a good brushing, still working with small sections at a time. This time use a pin brush and work against the grain of the fur.
4. Lastly, be sure to shower your cat with lots and lots of praise and play with him afterwards. This helps in creating a tighter bond between you and your pet and also makes it easier to groom and brush him in the future.
What Happens When A Dog Goes Through A False Pregnancy?.
Did you know that many female dogs can have one false pregnancy after another? Not all female dogs are created equal - there are some that have a nurturing drive so tremendous that they can show signs of a false pregnancy after every astral cycle.
What can cause a dog to have a false pregnancy? The current research studies offer the notion that false pregnancies are the result of a major hormonal imbalance. Female dogs that have this condition on an ongoing basis tend to ovulate longer than the standard four-to-five week period.
When a dog goes through a false pregnancy, she will exhibit almost the exact physical symptoms, as well as behavioral symptoms, that she would through a real pregnancy. Interestingly enough, her behavior will start displaying that of a mother who is trying to ‘nest.’
Changes in appetite are also extreme. When a dog is pregnant she will go through periods of huge appetite increases as well as periods of what appear to be hunger strikes which can last for days. However, in relation to a dog experiencing a false pregnancy, it can be her body telling her that she is not getting the proper amount of nutrients that she needs to feed her unborn puppies. Even though she is not truly pregnant, her body is telling her otherwise.
Probably the most interesting aspect of a false pregnancy are the physical changes that occur with the female dog”s body. They truly mimic a real pregnancy. For example, she will experience an unusual amount of weight-gain, even if her diet hasn”t changed. Her mammary glands will increase in size and she will start production of milk and colostrum. You may also notice that her pelvic and global area may pulsate - as she swells and relaxes the area.
